What can kids do at the beach in winter?
Well, if kids sandboards do not work, or they don’t have sandboards, then they just run around like mad things down the sand dunes, or jump down sand dunes! Or, draw patterns in the sand, or create artwork in the sand. Build awesome sandcastles (you don’t just have to be a little kid to build sandcastles), or go fishing or collect shells and pebbles. Always take your camera too. In the two photos below, Basti (12) and … Read entire article »

What happens when your sandboard does not work
These 4 photos of Zooty (11) falling off a sandboard were taken at Igoda beach, near East London, in June 2010. A homemade sandboard needs to be rubbed down (smooth and slippery) with candle wax and sea sand. We didn’t do this as the visit to Igoda beach was just a mad rush spur of the moment late afternoon “quick … Read entire article »
How to body surf
I’m a little afraid of the ocean these days. I worry about tidal waves and sharks, and being sucked deep into the ocean, beyond the breakers, by a backwash current. As a kid, though, I loved to swim in the ocean (especially at Nahoon beach in East London) and body surf. Yeah! I would use a boogie board from time to time, but it was a drag to have one with me in the waves, if I decided I just felt like swimming and ducking under waves or just hanging about out there splashing about with my friends. If I felt like doing this and was stuck with a boogie board, I’d have to … Read entire article »

Summer Watermelon memories
Not sure why I’m not so keen of fruit these days, or perhaps it’s because I had loads and loads of fruit as a kid, especially watermelon. What fun it was to go shopping with my mom and knock on those watermelons in the shop – it was like saying “Hello, are you in there, are you ripe and ready, cos I want to eat you up!” I think I was a bit of a mother’s nightmare when it came to watermelon pips – she removed them all for me, before giving me huge “smiley face” slices of watermelon to guzzle down – I usually ate them outdoors of course! I would start at one end and work … Read entire article »
Mermaid’s Pool in East London
This little beach in East London is really called Mermaid’s Pool. It’s small, and a little magical, and one can really imagine mermaids frolicking in the waters. Mermaid’s Pool is pretty much between the main beach of Nahoon, and Nahoon Reef, also not far from Nahoon River Mouth, and FootPrints Cafe. When Tony’s 21 year old daughter came to visit East … Read entire article »
Sunrise on Sea beach near East London
Sunrise on Sea beach is along the Jikeleza Route of the East Coast Resorts area, near East London, South Africa. Although a long stretch of sand with no rocks to step across before entering the ocean for a dip, surf, or paddle, can be gorgeous, a rocky beach like Sunrise on Sea can be beautiful too. It’s a quiet beach, does have … Read entire article »

When I first started to water ski
It looked so easy. And fun. I wanted to do it. Water ski. My friend crouched behind me in waist deep river water telling me to get my backside down and keep my feet up – she didn’t have to ask me – there were skates or something beneath the sand at the bottom of the river that were sometimes giving her dogs mild electric shocks as they (the dogs) pranced around in the water nearby. She supported me from behind and told me to keep my feet together and push against the water – wouldn’t my feet just stay together on their own, I wondered? – and then her husband started the motor … Read entire article »
I fell asleep on the beach once
Never again. I went to school on the Monday – and a good few days after that – with a line across my throat where the sunburnt skin separated from the skin on my face that had not burnt due to falling asleep with a cap over my face. I think my friend and I slept for nearly three hours like that, under a hot sun, just burning away. She slept on her stomach, and had watery blisters down the back of her legs for a few days afterwards. Good grief, what us kids got up to – not caring about sun protection, we’re lucky to still be alive. We were 17. My … Read entire article »
